December 28th WSM Presents Classic Albums Live Note For Note- Cut For Cut featuring the music of LED ZEPPELIN I, with Rock Watkins Door 7pm All Ages* Tickets available at all Ticketmaster locations |
![]() Note for Note: Cut for Cut- that’s the moniker of Classic Albums Live, a rock show in which the best Toronto musicians recreate, live and with exact precision, definitive albums from the 1970’s. If you are thinking tribute band, think again. You will not find anyone in spandex or wearing wigs. It is all about the music. It’s like a recital- like Mozart being played by a symphony, says concept creator, Craig Martin. To recreate a classic album like Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon or Led Zeppelin’s IV, takes some creativity. One might need alarm clocks or a 20 piece choir. Martin figures there is at least one person who’s waiting for that alarm or scream, and if it isn’t there, then it isn’t precise. Hence, Note for Note: Cut for Cut. Classic Albums Live. An experience to definitely be heard. |

Saturday, December 30th WSM Presents The Campbell Brothers Sacred Steel Door 6pm All Ages* Tickets to be available at all Ticketmaster locations and Aaron's Alley. |
![]() The Campbell Brothers present Sacred Steel: African-American gospel music with electric steel guitar and vocal. This tradition is just now emerging from the House of God Keith Dominion Church, where for over sixty years it has been an integral part of worship and a vital, if little known, American tradition. As the music moves from sanctuary to concert hall -- including the Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music and Symphony Space -- secular audiences are now able to appreciate a performance both devoted and rocking. Pedal steel guitarist Chuck Campbell and his lap steel-playing brother Darick are two of the finest in this tradition. Rounding out the band, which has been playing together for nearly two decades, is a high-energy rhythm section featuring brother Phil Campbell on electric guitar and his son Carlton on drums. Katie Jackson's classic, gutsy gospel vocals bring the ensemble to a level of energy and expression that defies description. The Campbell Brothers present a compelling, rich variety of material from the African-American Holiness-Pentecostal repertoire with a new twist: the growling, wailing, shouting, singing and swinging voice of the steel guitar, played as you have never heard it played before. |

Thursday, January 11th WSM Presents An Evening with Marshall Crenshaw Doors 7pm All Ages* Tickets available at all Ticketmaster locations. |
![]() Singer/songwriter Marshall Crenshaw has an impressive body of work establishing him as one of America's most creative and intelligent tunesmiths today. Born and raised in Detroit, Crenshaw's musical influence was firmly grounded in old 45s from the 50s and early 60s, and later pop R&B of the early 70s. Detroit was no hot-box of rock-n-roll in those days, so Marshall answered an ad in Rolling Stone for a part on Broadway. He landed a part in +Beatlemania's road tour but found it creatively stifling. He bought a four-track recorder and started making demos every chance he had, eventually putting together an EP. He then hit the budding new wave club scene in NYC in the early 80s. It was Crenshaw's debut single on fellow scenester Alan Betrock's label, "Something's Gonna' Happen" that caught the eye of major label Warner Bros. Marshall recorded five superbly crafted studio albums in the course of seven years, leaving to record one album, "Life's Too Short" on MCA. Around this time Crenshaw began to dabble in acting again, appearing in movies (Peggy Sue Got Married, La Bamba) and did a guest appearance on Nickelodeon's series Pete and Pete, then dropped out of sight for three years. Upon his emergence, he signed with indie-label Razor & Tie, releasing "Live: My Truck is Home" (94), "Miracle of Science" (96), "The 9 Volt Years" (98)," #447" (99) and his latest release "What's In the Bag" (03), critically acclaimed for it’s freshness, thoughtfulness and catchy hook-laden melodies [reaffirming his status as a savvy purveyor of guitar-pop] USA Today.

Wednesday, January 31st After Dark Events Presents Thursday with Murder By Death, Fear Before the March of Flames and Heavy Heavy Low Low Door 6pm All Ages* Tickets available at all Ticketmaster locations on Dec 9th 12n. |
Soul-baring
post-hardcore quintet Thursday was formed in 1997 by vocalist Geoff
Rickly, along with guitarists Steve Pedulla and Tom Keeley, bassist Tim
Payne and drummer Tucker Rule. Thursday's frequent touring and
furious passion fueled a grassroots response and by 2002 the band was on
the main stage of the Warped Tour and enjoyed radio and MTV
success with their single "Understanding in a Car Crash". Their
2003 release, "War All the Time" was met with considerable critical
acclaim for it's ruminations on 9/11. At this time they recruited the
keyboardist from the album, Andrew Everding, as a fulltime member.
Extensive touring behind the album took its toll on the band and it looked
like the end for Thursday. Additionally, Rickly was diagnosed with
epilepsy, and allergic reactions to his medication further strained the
tour and he needed time to recover. The group, still unhappy, felt
responsible for the commitments they had already made for 2004 and chose
to fulfill them, with that summer's Warped Tour being their last
gig. However, during the festival they found they were having more fun
playing together than ever. Thursday stayed together, taking some
well deserved time off, returning re-energized to record their latest
release, "A City by the Light Divided" in May 2006. They tour in
support of the album and for the
Shirts for a Cure
organization.

Friday, February 2nd WSM Presents The Jazz Mandolin Project with Break Reality Door 8pm All Ages* Tickets available at all Ticketmaster locations. |
![]() The Jazz Mandolin Project's exciting exploration of Leo Tolstoy's famous short story, "How Much Land Does a Man Need?" is retold through narration, a new magical body of composed music and video footage that Jamie Masefield collected while touring the country in 2005. The contemporary observations follow the Russian tale in a moving modern context that enables the audience to reflect and ask questions of its own time and place. This timely performance is a unique combination of literature, video and live musical accompaniment. |

Wednesday, February 14th WSM Presents Mastodon with Converge, and Priestess Door tba All Ages* |
![]() The Atlanta, GA, quartet Mastodon plays an innovative, hard-to-categorize blend of metal, grindcore, and hardcore that puts them right at home on the Relapse label alongside the likes of Today Is the Day, the Dillinger Escape Plan, Coalesce, Burnt by the Sun, and other boundary-crossing acts. The group's lineup actually includes two former members of Today Is the Day: guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Bränn Dailor (both also onetime members of the band Lethargy). Their lineup is rounded out by bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders and guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds. They released their debut EP, Lifesblood, on Relapse in the fall of 2001. Remission was released the following year, and after the band toured for much of 2003, a second full-length, Leviathan, arrived in 2004. In 2006, the group compiled all of their early recordings -- including the tracks from the Lifesblood EP -- and released Call of the Mastodon. It was followed by the DVD Workhorse Chronicles and the all-new Blood Mountain. ~ William York, All Music Guide |

Thursday, February 22nd After Dark Events Presents Door 7pm All Ages*
|
Andrew McMahon is the ethereal voice, song-writing powerhouse and full-contact keyboardist for Something Corporate, the piano-rock quintet praised by one critic for its "combination of intelligent lyrics, infectious melodies and killer piano". Now he is taking something of a spring break from the four straight years recording and touring with the band in order to offer up a solo debut as Jack's Mannequin , "Everything in Transit", a compilation of songs put into a concept album exploring his alienating return to his hometown and the dissolution of a longtime relationship. On "Everything in Transit" McMahon brings his signature piano and distinctive tenor and features Jim Wirt (producer of SC , friend and collaborator) on bass, guitars and vocals, Bobby (Raw) Anderson (guitar), and Patrick Warren (organ and string arrangements). What does Andrew McMahon hope to accomplish with Jack's Mannequin? A chance to vocalize a different period in his life and to broaden his musical landscape. He also hopes to bring fresh energy back to Something Corporate and draw greater attention to the band. Considering his rise as a talented, iconoclastic performer, there is no doubt Andrew McMahon will be a magnet for audience attention no matter the musical platform. |

Thursday, February 28th After Dark Events presents MC LARS with Suburban Legends, Patent Pending and more Door 5pm All Ages* $10.00 adv ticket available at all Ticketmaster locations. |
It
isn't easy being a post punk Laptop rapper. You are forced to lead a genre
that doesn't exist. MC Lars is a member of what he calls the
iGeneration, a group born and raised in the time of Ninja Turtles,
cassette tapes and new wave music, who now live in an age of Desperate
Housewives, Sidekicks and screamo bands. These kids have grown
up using the Internet as part of their daily lives. They
carry 5,000 tunes in their pocket but are faced with the glooming fact
that the world's oil supply and Social Security will both run out in their
lifetime. MC Lars is the hero of this new generation, addressing
their thoughts and every day struggles in his music. The Graduate
is his indie label EP and has sold over 10,000 copies to a dedicated
collection of misfits through unexpected outlets as Rolling Stone
and MTV News, The album is full of wildly different subject matter,
from playful and goofy, to socially conscious and critical. The
Graduate is a collection of songs that may very well be the time
capsule for this generation. In 100 years, iPods, MySpace and
Hot Topic may be nothing more than a memory, but one listen to MC
Lars music will bring people back to the
iGeneration. |
